Welcome to Class 1C –
Miss Coley’s Class
Autumn Term 2017
Welcome to our class page! Here you can find out the exciting things we will be learning this term.
Our topic this term is ‘Toys’. We will be looking at the History of toys and comparing toys from the past to the kind of toys we play with today. We will also be looking at the work of the artist LS Lowry and we have an exciting trip planned to the Lowry gallery.
As part of our Literacy we will be reading a wonderful story called ‘Brown Paper Bear, which begins with a young girl staying over at her Grandfathers home. She discovers an old toy chest and is taken on a magical journey where she meets characters and toys from a long time ago!
During the second half term we will be continuing with our ‘Toy’ theme. We will be exploring Design and Technology and looking at different properties of materials in Science.
Another story we will be exploring is ‘The Naughty Bus’. This book is all about a London Bus that isn’t the best behaved toy! The bus gets into all sorts of trouble but luckily a little boy manages to rescue the bus, but where will the adventure end?
Maths will continue to be a focus throughout the term. We will focus much of our teaching on place value and addition and subtraction.
Within this term, you will have the opportunity for a parents meeting where we can discuss how your child has settled into their new year. There will also be the Christmas Performance and dates for this will follow.
Please ensure your child brings a water bottle into school. They are available for the children to access throughout the day. Please note we only encourage water and not juice.
Homework will start after October half term. We alternate between an English and Maths task. The homework will consolidate what we have been learning in class. Any questions with this please ask.
Children will be encouraged to change their own reading book when they have confidently finished it. Your child is required to read from the school reading scheme regularly and is encouraged to read as much as possible as this is vital in improving both their reading and writing skills. Please make sure you record when your child has read in your child’s planner. These records can also include any other books your child is reading at home (both fiction and non-fiction), as this allows me to keep track of how much and what they are reading. We also are encouraging children to read at least three times a week at home. If they do this they will receive a raffle ticket and may be lucky enough to win a small prize for doing so!
PE is planned for Monday and Thursday and will be taken by an external PE coach and myself. However, there may be other opportunities for P.E throughout the week. Therefore, it is important that children have their kit with them each day. They will be sent home half termly or if they get particularly muddy!
This year, our class have a big responsibility in looking after ‘Hoot’. Each night a child will be selected to take ‘Hoot’ home. You may wish to take photos or write about what he has been doing. This will then go on our class display.
We are always on the lookout for parent helpers so if you would like to get involved, please contact a member of staff. Any help big or small is greatly appreciated.
Finally, I hope you find this information useful, but if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Many thanks for your continued support.
