Spring Term 2018

Creative Curriculum

Our topic this term focuses on ‘Cheshire Life.’ Please look at the Upper Key Stage 2 page for details of what we will be learning in our creative curriculum subjects this term.

English

This term, we will be focusing on the text ‘Journey to Jo’Burg’ by Beverley Naidoo. This South African story is about the journey two brave children take to find their mother in Johannesburg in order to save their baby sister. This challenging text, written during the apartheid, has been recommended to Year 5 from other local schools and English consultants. We are very much looking forward to getting stuck into this book, unpicking authorial devices and themes. It will also help us to learn about stories from other cultures and explore the contrasting settings within our ‘Cheshire Life’ focus. A significant amount of our writing will be based around this text during the term which will allow us to show our understanding. We will be producing Narrative, Poetry and Persuasive Writing. Additionally, we will continue to undertake weekly focused Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) lessons, linking work closely to ‘Journey to Jo’burg’.

Maths

Maths is taught in differentiated sets across the year group and homework is set by maths teachers. This term, we will be focusing on fractions, decimals and percentages, as well as measurement and statistics. We will continue to focus on written calculation methods during our morning ‘4 a Day’ activities. Our reasoning and problem solving skills will be continually reinforced in our daily lessons, as well as through our ‘Maths in Minutes’ activities. Reading and Planners

We expect everyone to read from their school reading book regularly – a minimum of three times per week. Please make sure that you update your planner when you have read. This includes personal texts such as non-fiction and magazines. Planners are to be signed for every Monday ready to update our reading chart with the number of times you have read that week. Superstar points will be awarded for reading three or more times.

We will spend some time at the end of each week reflecting on what you have achieved and setting a new target for the following week.

Parents/Guardians – In order to develop your child’s understanding of their reading, it is advised that children are asked questions about their book. In the back of their planners is a list of questions that you can ask your child in order to help develop their comprehension skills.

Homework

We will alternate between English and maths homework given out once a week, usually on a Thursday and due in on the following Monday. Spellings and spelling homework will be handed out on a Monday and will be tested/collected on Thursdays. Occasionally, children may be asked to complete a short activity relating to topic work or research a particular topic at home.

PE Kits

It is very important that PE kits are in school every day. We are currently timetabled to have our PE lessons on Tuesday and Friday however, as you can appreciate, timetables have to be flexible so the days may change. If your child wears their PE kit to an after school club, please ensure that they bring it back in the following day. If for any reason they cannot partake in our PE lessons, they are required to bring in a note of explanation from home.

We would absolutely love to have parent/grandparent helpers for our reading in 5L. If you can spare the occasional hour, please contact me.
