Class 1C

Welcome to Miss Coley’s class page.

Here you will find information about the exciting projects that Year 1 will be covering, as well as any key dates or important pieces of information that you will need to know for the upcoming weeks and months.

Welcome back! I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas break with your family and friends. I’d like to say a big thank you for all your kind gifts. We have a busy term ahead with lots of exciting things planned.

The term will begin with a new theme; ‘Amazing Animals’

We will be exploring continents in Geography and this links so well with our core text- Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. It’s a story about a little boy who discovers a penguin at his front door. Is the penguin lost or has he been found? The boy tries to find out where penguins live and we will find out which continent they come from.

If you would like to purchase the text we do encourage this so children can have their own copy of the story to read and explore at home with family. We also have a class teddy that goes home every night with a child. I wonder who will take ‘Spotty’ home tonight.

Year one will continue to be taught under the revised National Curriculum and children will be assessed against these objectives throughout the year. The children will also undertake the statutory phonic assessment which will take place in June 2019. We will be working hard towards this all year and will provide resources and support throughout the year.

Important Dates

  • Junior Stem Workshop WC 14th January
  • Chester Zoo – WC 4th February
  • Mid Year report – WC 4th February
  • Parent’s evening – WC 11th February
  • Last of term – 14th February

Please ensure that school uniform is clearly labeled so that items don’t get misplaced during the year.

Water Bottles

Please ensure that your child brings a named water bottle into school everyday containing water only.

Homework is given to reinforce learning from school and establish good working habits. It can also give you an indication of how your child is doing and ways you can help if they are finding something tricky.

Homework will be sent home every Friday and needs to be returned to school on the following Wednesday. This will support learning that we have covered in school. Homework will alternate each week between a Maths and English focus.

Spellings will be sent home to learn on a Friday and these will be tested on a the following Friday in their spelling books which will be sent home for you to see how they have got on. We will send weekly guidance to help your child learn these.  These will include Common Exception Words (up to 15 per half term) and 6 phonics spellings weekly. Children will need to apply these to sentences and remember to include their writing targets.

Please continue to read with your child at least 3 times a week and record this in your child’s planner as this is so valuable and vital to improving their reading and writing skills. One reading task each week will be linked to developing comprehension.

Children will be encouraged to change their own reading books when they have confidently finished it. Please ensure you record in the planner when children have completed a reading book. Your child will read from the school reading scheme that is matched to their reading ability. If your child wishes to read from any other books that they are interested in, these can also be recorded in their planners. Pupils will be entered into a raffle for a prize every week when they read at least 3 times or more at home.

Maths in minutes

A short maths challenge will be sent home every night( not on a Friday) for pupils to complete prior to the following maths lesson. This will only take a few minutes to complete and will improve children’s reasoning and problem solving skills. Please support them with this task but let us know if there are any areas that they are struggling with so we can help them in school. Your child’s teacher will check these books regularly, although the children will self- mark during the lesson.

As ever, we continue our regular focus on the four operations (+, -, ÷ and x) ‘4 a Day’ morning maths activities that the children complete when they enter class. These activities are self-marked but checked regularly by the teacher.

Please ensure that your child has their full PE kit in school everyday and that it is clearly labeled. The PE kit will be sent home at the end of each half term to be washed unless they need washing sooner. PE will be taught twice a week. As we approach colder weather, please ensure your child has suitable kit for outdoor PE lessons.
