Fundamentals
Each year group has a set of FUNDAMENTALS that we aim for all children to master (i.e. be able to do ‘automatically’) by the end of the academic year. These are focused on English and Maths as these skills enable the wider curriculum to be accessed. Specifically, these cover elements of reading (phonics and fluency), handwriting (letter formation and fluency), spelling, grammar and punctuation and key maths facts and calculations. These have been matched to the school’s Key Learning expectations in the related area of the English and Maths curriculum.
These fundamental skills need to be closely monitored by the teacher and progress assessed half termly. The application of the fundamentals are assessed across the curriculum (i.e. the pupil applies them automatically across subjects). Progress towards these is included in reports to parents.
